Make Small mistakes

I watched a Rizen vid recently that talks about making small mistakes vs the big mistakes. Poker is a game of mistakes after all and the player making less will win most often. Unfortunately i tend to make the big mistakes late in tournies most often... its something i continue to work on.

This is a hand from the Daily double B tourny tonight on Fulltilt...

Full Tilt Poker, NL Hold'em Tournament, 150/300 Blinds, 25 Ante, 8 Players
LeggoPoker.com Hand History Converter

MP1: 1,710
MP2: 10,335
CO: 8,588
Hero (BTN): 9,180
SB: 20,584
BB: 13,126
UTG: 8,305
UTG+1: 6,790

Pre-Flop: (650) Kd As dealt to Hero (BTN)
UTG folds, UTG+1 calls 300, 2 folds, CO raises to 1,200, Hero raises to 9,155 and is All-In, 3 folds, CO calls 7,363 and is All-In

Flop: (18,076) 4s Qh 6c (2 Players - 1 is All-In)

Turn: (18,076) 3h (2 Players - 1 is All-In)

River: (18,076) 2s (2 Players - 1 is All-In)

Results: 18,076 Pot

Analysis:
I start the hand with 30BB and Villain with 28BB so we're deep. There's a EP limp and villain makes it 4xbb. Villain was running 18/11. So he's raising 11% of his hands which is roughly 22+, KQs, ATo+, ATs+ vs. this range i have 53% equity. if Villain is folding 50% of the time i have 47% equity... so the push is still a +ev play either way.

My thoughts:
while my spread sheet says its a +EV play i think it might've been a mistake for several reasons.

1. We were pretty deep

2. I had been playing pretty aggresively. The sb and myself had reraised or reshoved this guy several times already.

3. I searched him on OPR and he had a 53% rating... person's with this rating i think generally have problems letting go of good but not great hands (like medium pocket pairs) and can be outplayed post flop rather easily.

So what are my options on this hand?

1. Reraise - Make it 3600 which would give him about 2:1 on a call... but looks a lot stronger? I would be pot committed and have to call if he reshoves but if he calls i would have around a pot sized bet left on the flop. He'd have 2 opportunities to fold a better hand; pre flop and on the flop.

2. Smooth Call - Just calling controls the size of the pot allowing more flexibility. It also gives the very aggressive SB a chance to make a move which i'd be more than willing to call if everyone else folds. On the flop i could easily outplay villain to take the pot or fold if he makes a big bet leaving me with 27bb.

I'm generally an agressive player, so i tend to choose the more aggresive option whenever i'm in a hand... but i've busted several tournaments making aggressive plays, that had i played differently i couldve gotten away from or won outright.

I'm not a fan of the waiting for better spots plan but i do feel i have an edge on alot of the field in some of the tournys i play in. I'm looking for ways to take better advantage of that edge.

I'd appreciate any thoughts on my analysis above.

Sunday Tournaments

Today I felt pretty good about my play, the best i've felt in some time actually. I've been playing pretty good for the past few days. Bubbled a 180 on Wednesday then final tabled one on Thursday. On Saturday i finished 23/1538 in a $5 FO tourny.

I played in three tournaments on Stars today; The Daily 15k, The Sunday 100k and the $3+r 25k Guaranteed. I busted the 15k & 100k OTM after playing pretty good. I spent 7 buyins in the $3 rebuy and was playing the best i've played in some time, but took a number of beats that kept me from building a huge stack; TT < 88, AA < JJ, then AA < KJ. The first two were against the same villain but fortunately i had a huge stack and was left with about 10bb and i was able to battle back each time. Unfortunately having to play short stack ninja constantly eventually caught up with me and i busted ITM. But I never tilted and i felt i played a really strong game.

I don't normally play Fulltilt on Sundays but for the past week i've been playing several single table tier one tournys and mananged to accumulate 6 $24+2 tokens. I used one of those today to play in a $90 man KO. I took it down for $576.00, this is the 2nd one of these i've won and i'm always surprised at how soft the competition is.

To end the evening i played in a $7.60 36 man sng satellite to the MSOP. The Top 2 places paid, I finished 1st winning a $100+9 entry to the MSOP main event on July 5th which is a 250k Guaranteed NLHE tourny. I could unregister and use the money but i'm gonna continue to work on my game and take the shot.

So a pretty good day.

May Results & June Goals

May turned out to be a pretty rough month for me. I'm down on both sites, although i still managed to make 500.00 profit on Fulltilt. I kinda lost my focus & desire there for a bit. I was busting everything in very poor fashion. I did go through some personal issues and that was a part of it, but i think the main problem was a two week stretch where my sleep pattern was completely out of whack.

I've played a few tournys recently that have me feeling pretty good about my game. At least i know its comming back to where i want it to be and i just have to continue to put in work. My mental game is my biggest leak right now in my opinion. This is something i really need to work on in June. I have to play only when i feel i'm not tired and can focus for the entire tournament.

June Goals...

-Study More Poker
Continue to watch PXF videos, Review my own tournaments and read HOH. I will also post one complete tourny handhistory for review each week on pxf. I don't know if i will get any responses but i will put it out there to be torn apart.

-Only play when able to Focus
This one is pretty obvious but still i am guilty of playing when tired, sleepy or distracted.

-Have a plan of attack
Right now i basically log on and jump in what ever tournament is available. I think i need to develop a consistant plan for what MTTs i'm gonna play. In addition to that i need to have a plan for the tournament... think chip goals for the end of each hour.

Thats it for June, hopefully i have better results this month

Playing Poorly

Wow, i'm sucking big time right now. I just continue to donk off my stack in tournaments. Even in the 180s, where a month or so ago i was a lock to final table with less than 45 remaining and a big stack. I'm just finding ways to lose. A major part of the problem is i'm over playing strong but not monster hands in marginal spots, especially JJ. But i've also busted with AT with just TPTK... sad.
Overall my play leaves a lot to be desired.

Its tough watching my bankroll drop, i've lost about $300 in the last week. But as always i'm optimistic. I'm playing more $6 45man turbos to build my confidence and get my aggressiveness back. I will buckle down and watch a ton of PXF vids this weekend. Hopefully i will take down something next month.

Think Before Acting

Just busted out of a perfectly played $3+r with one really bad play. I really feel i played perfectly up to this hand... i was focused, talking to myself, playing aggressively until this hand;

Poker Stars, $3 + $0.30 NL Hold'em Tournament, 600/1,200 Blinds, 8 Players
LeggoPoker.com - Hand History Converter

SB: 56,999
Hero (BB): 38,781
UTG: 40,813
UTG+1: 59,200
MP1: 21,543
MP2: 24,134
CO: 93,189
BTN: 30,072

Pre-Flop: (2,800) J J dealt to Hero (BB)
4 folds, CO raises to 2,400, BTN raises to 6,400, SB folds, Hero raises to 38,656 and is All-In, CO folds, BTN calls 23,547 and is All-In

Flop: (63,894) 4 Q 8 (2 Players - 1 is All-In)

Turn: (63,894) 5 (2 Players - 1 is All-In)

River: (63,894) 3 (2 Players - 1 is All-In)

Results: 63,894 Pot
Hero showed J J (a pair of Jacks) and LOST (-30,072 NET)
BTN showed A A (a pair of Aces) and WON 63,894 (+33,822 NET)

If i had just stopped and thought about this hand i think i couldve gotten away. Big stack min raises ( this guy's opr was 5 so i was not concerned about his raise at all) and button reraised. His Range had to be at least TT+ AK.

Sigh, once i can make great reads/plays in tough spots with big hands then i think i will get over the hump and start crushing these tournies. Until then i'll be donating.

This week's Study Guide

Writing things down seem to make it more likely that i'll get it done. Just makes it more concrete for me i guess. So i've decided that i'll write down what i plan on studying at the beginning of each week.

After yesterday's tournys i didnt play at all today... just worked out, cleaned up my apartment, watched tv and browsed BBV forum on 2+2 (crazy/funny place!).

This week i want to focus on several aspects of my game;

  • Calculate EV in shove/re-shoving situations

  • Calculate EV of Calling a shove

These two here could probably take me the whole month really. I will begin tomorrow by scanning several MTTs, especially mid-late stages, for situations where i shoved, reshoved or called AI...like my bust out hand from yesterday now that i think about it.

  • Review rebuy tournament strategy

  • Review HU strategy for MTTs

These two are for when i get tired of the math :) between these four points i probably have my study guide for the month.

Rebuy tournaments have a lot of advantages over the regular FO MTT, but myself along with alot of other people have problems with them. I think rebuy hour strategy is critical... I will make a post on rebuy tournament strategy some time this month hopefully. In the mean time i will try to watch a few vids from the rebuy hr study guide on PXF.

It'd suck to finally get heads up for a big pay out and not be fully prepared. I've played my fair share of heads up in multitable sngs and in the $5 MTT that i won and have done well for the most part. I basically just play aggressive and try to out play my opponents. So i'm gonna do some research on Sage & Nash systems and watch some HU vids from the PXF MTT HU guide

Well thats really for the month really but i could possibly do some work on all of these areas this week... oh and i'm still reading HOH2.

Sunday Tourny Results

Went out and got some lunch and a redbull just incase i go deep in anything and need the boost. Made it back just in time for the start of my first tourny

$22 20K Guaranteed @ 12n

- This is a deep stack tourny starting with 3k chips and 15min blinds

- I'm amazed at how bad the players are... I see one guy open shove with ATo and alot of overplaying TP... also very loose

- I take down a few pots... called a 4xbb r(bb=20) with 44 and flopped the boat 4s9s9d villain cbets weak and i smooth call, turn 2h villain chks and i bet like an idiot... failed to extract.

- several hands later i raise up several limpers with AQo and get called by everyone, flop comes 239r and i cbet little more than half pot to take it down

- Alot of loose play... i raise 3xbb (bb=30)with 98s utg+1, MP villain shoves +5k chips and is called by btn with +4k chips. showdown: A3s vs. AJs split pot on straight

- Next hand I raise utg with JJ, same MP villain that showed A3s last hand shoves again, no callers.. in 2+2 vernacular; I snap call, high five the monitor, pump fist

- Villain showed AJs... flopped the flush :( turned the royal flush for good measure:( :( and i'm out in 28minutes of play. sweet tourny though.

This was to be the theme for the day unfortunately. Instead of jumping into something esle right away i decided to wait the hour or so for my next tourny; the $11 15k daily.

- I played pretty good in this one and had a big stack +18k @ 200/400 50antes, when i made a pretty standard steal attempt with A3s.

- BB flat calls. Flop comes As4h3h... I bet little more than half the pot... villain c/r AI for +18k... he covered

- couldve flopped a set? but could also have a draw, yes? 52, A4? nah. Could i get away from this?

- I bet weak on a drawy flop, i was pretty active... I have 2pair hidden monster... So many hands i beat make a move here... hmmm

- I make the call, Villain shows AhKh for TPNFD and I'm a 55/45 dog on the flop. Turn Kd, River Ks. nh gg.

- perhaps i could've gotten away, nah. I think I'm way ahead there most of the time

- Just reviewed the tourny and i ran pretty well up front to build this stack. I had been pretty active... perhaps a bit too active for stage of the tourny and my stack size to blind ratio. But i had decided that i'd keep a real active image yesterday. That had nothing to do with busting out... just felt i couldve pulled it back a bit.

The 100k had started so i was still in a tourny. But it was mid day and it was another really hot Sunday. Then poker tracker decided to act up... freezing and taking Stars with it. When i got everything back up i was getting errors so i had to play blind again. So no tracker, I'm hot and uncomfortable... not a good combo.

I get it AI in SB vs BB with QJ vs AT on 99T flop early in tourny. Turn is a T for the boat obviously and i'm out of another tourny. Pretty large field though so i think i had to make moves early.

Oh there's more my friends.

Decided to let things cool down a bit. So i watched TV and slept till around 8pm when i got in the $27 25K Guaranteed.

- I was doing pretty good, had +6k chips at 75/150
- I raised KK utg... I get called by MP, SB and BB
- Flop comes KJ5r and i lead out for 1100 into a 1800 pot
- MP villain shoves, I snap call, high five the monitor, pump fist..
- Villain shows QTs. A on turn gives him the straight :( and i don't improve by river.
- I'm left with a functional stack of around 2500, blinds go up to 100/200, i'm below avg stack and eventually bust out.

At this point I'm done with the large field tournaments for the day and go on to play some $6, $12 and even a $27 45 man turbo sngs and a few $12 180s. I recover the days buy-ins plus $90.00 extra... so i didnt lose money on the day but not quite the profit margin i was aiming for.

w/e

If you haven't heard about him yet just want to bring your attention to this sick individual... 850k profit in May... so far.

One of these days... One of these days....

Sunday Tournaments

My cousin is in town so we went out last night and I had a pretty good time. But as of right now 8:48am I'm feeling pretty good to play today. I may have some girlfriend (soon to be ex) drama later today, hopefully it doesn't throw me completely off my game.

Anyway I'm feeling pretty optimistic so i figure i will play up to 5% of my Stars Bankroll in tournaments today;

$22 20K Guaranteed @ 12n
$11 Daily 15 Grand @ 2:05pm
$11 Sunday Hundred @ 3:30pm??

$27.50 25K Guaranteed @ 8:00pm
$55 50K Guaranteed @ 9:30pm

Well thats close to 5%. Obviously if i go deep in any of the earlier tournys then i may not play the later set. I'm not sure if i really want to play the large field Sunday Hundred today... but its pretty soft, so we'll see what happens.

wish me luck!

Boring week so far

Haven't been able to play much at all. I'm back in school again, taking a stats course of all things. Considering i haven't been in a class room since 99 perhaps i should've started with something easier.

Anyway i've been studying since sunday and had the first interm exam tonight. I'd like to say i'm confident that i passed, but honestly i cant be sure. meh. nothining to do but wait and see... so back to poker!

Will try to play several tournies tomorrow.

Tournies on tap
09:00 $5.50 MTT FO
10:12 $3+R turbo sat to Sunday Warm up
10:30 $3+R turbo sat to Sunday Million
Perhaps a few $4.40 180 man sngs

I played my first satellite since like early last year the other day and it was incredibly soft. My plan with these is to win the seat, unregister and use the tourny dollars in medium buy-in tournaments; $11+R, $11-1R+1A, $33 & $55 FO Mtts.

Hopefully i can win one tomorrow and start taking shots in these tournaments. Will report tomorrow.

9:42am - update:
busted a $4/180 and the $5 FO so far... not playing well... feel kinda out of it... playing really passively for some reason. In another 180 now and waiting for $8+r to start. will try to up the aggression.

10:45 - Update:
Busted the 8+R after about 6 buyins, managae to get up to 5.5k but thats it lost JJ vs. KK to wipe that out... then ran bad losing alot of races with pocket pairs vs. overs or overs vs. pocket pairs.

Took 3 double buy-ins in the 3+R... much of the same in this tourny...but just realized i forgot to take the add-on, so its not looking good in this one. ok just busted that with 66 < ATo....

still in the $4/180 - - 34/48

Monies invested: $81.00 hmm perhaps i shouldn't have played the 8+R

11:25am out of the 180 in 27th KQs < A5s

thats all folks!
